Day 1: Puno to Amantani Island

Uros islands reed boat tour
Lake Titicaca Homestay Tour starts with a short car ride from your hotel to the port, where a motor boat waits for all participants. It’s a regular slow motor boat that has three parts: the inside, outside back and outside upper deck; there is also a basic bathroom on board.
Along the way from Puno to Amantani Island, you’ll stop off at the Uros reed floating Islands for a guided visit. The surface of the islands is uneven, thin, and some liken walking on it to walking on a waterbed.
Your group guide provides information in Spanish and English about the way of life, and the natural source that provides home, transportation and sustenance for the local residents.
By joining this group boat tour, it’s more likely, you’ll go through the touristy side of the reed Islands because of its busiest time.
Uros Island building
Locals will invite you walk inside their reed house where they might try to sell you their embroideries, tapestries and reed souvenirs. A traditional reed boat ride is also offered for an extra cost which allows you navigate between two floating Islands.
After 2 hour stop at Uros reed islands including a last stop at a commercial reed Island, you’ll find yourself navigating on the way to Amantani Island.
1:00 PM arriving at Amantani Island
Amantani Island is located almost 3 hours away from Uros. On arrival at the port, your friendly local host greets you with open arms. You’ll experience the local culture firsthand as you join a local family in their home.
Pachatata Amantani hiking
After lunch in the family house, you’ll get free afternoon for walking around or embark on a one hour hike to the lookout point and ceremonial centers of “Pachatata” or “Pachamama”. Enjoy one of the highlight of your Titicaca Trip by witnessing the mesmerizing sunset over the expansive Lake Titicaca, a sight that will etch itself in your memory.
Later, enjoy a tasty dinner, join the Andean feast organized by the community to take part of their traditional dances and rest in the comfort of your local lodge.
Day 2: Taquile Island to Puno
8:00 AM navigating from Amantani to Taquile
Taquile Island hike
After an early breakfast at your Amantani house, you’ll traverse the endless blue horizon of Lake Titicaca, getting to Taquile Island from Amantani in roughly 1 hour, watching the first Island get smaller and the Taquile Island gets bigger.
9:00 AM hiking Taquile Island
The group motor boat drops you off at the North end of the elongated Taquile Island, where a steady walk along a well-paved path provides time to admire the scenery.
You’ll see and encounter an ancient indigenous community dating back before the Incas that has learnt how to conserve its original, genuine traditions and Andean political organization throughout the time.
Lunch in Taquile Island
At a local community restaurant, you’ll have local delicacies based on Quinoa soup and white rice with grilled trout, or vegetable omelet, and hot Coca tea.
Following the route in Taquile, descend through another trail down to the port to onboard again the motor boat and head back to Puno city.
After 2 hour 45 minute boat ride, you’ll arrive at the Puno port and transferred to your hotel.
Duration: 2 days
Why to book with us?
With so many Puno tour companies out there offering the very same Lake Titicaca 2 Day Itinerary, what would make you decide to book with us? What’s the deal?
Lake Titicaca 2 Day Tour itself doesn’t have the best reputation due to many cases and stories about some of the tour companies taking money for the entire tour but not paying the host families.
When the indigenous community members of Amantani are not paid for the provided lodging and meals during the visit, they have to travel long distances by water and land to ask to be paid.
In order to achieve well treatment and payment to families, the best way to ensure you’re contributing the local’s development and securing they receive their money is paying directly in person to the families.
How much to pay?
The Amantani family lodging and meals base pricing is $20 USD or S/80 PEN per person.
When to pay?
At any time you consider is the best moment. However, the second day early in the morning after breakfast, before continuing the trip to Taquile Island might be a great time in our opinion.
